## Abstract

Fluorinated styrenes of the formula I: ##STR1## where R.sub.1 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl and R.sub.2 is the repeating unit ##STR2## where x is zero or any positive integer, which are useful as compatibilizing and toughening agents for various polymers such as styrene, dienes (butadiene, isoprene, etc.) acrylates, polymethacrylates, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyamides, etc. Particularly preferred are p-(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-hydroxy isopropyl)-.alpha.-methylstyrene, polymers thereof, block and random copolymers thereof and polymer blends incorporating the same.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A block copolymer of a fluorinated styrene of the formula ##STR8## wherein R.sub.1 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl and R.sub.2 is the repeating styrene unit ##STR9## wherein x is zero or any positive integer with polystyrene blocks.

### Claim 2

A block copolymer of a fluorinated styrene of the formula ##STR10## wherein R.sub.1 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl and R.sub.2 is the repeating styrene unit ##STR11## wherein x is zero or any positive integer with at least a carbonyl-group containing polymer block.

### Claim 3

A block copolymer of a fluorinated styrene of the formula ##STR12## wherein R.sub.1 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl and R.sub.2 is the repeating styrene unit ##STR13## wherein x is zero or any positive integer with at least one diene containing polymer block.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The block copolymer of a fluorinated styrene according to claim 2, wherein the carbonyl-group containing polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polycarbonates, polyesters and polyamides.
