## Abstract

A dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer comprising a support having on one side thereof, in order, a subbing layer and a dye layer, and wherein the subbing layer comprises a vacuum-deposited metal oxide, and wherein either a) an infrared-absorbing material is contained in the dye layer or a layer associated therewith, or b) the other side of the support has a slipping layer thereon.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer comprising a support having on one side thereof, in order, a subbing layer and a dye layer, and wherein said subbing layer comprises a vacuum-deposited metal oxide, and wherein either a) an infrared-absorbing material is contained in said dye layer or a layer associated therewith, or b) the other side of the support has a slipping layer thereon.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The element of claim 1 wherein said metal oxide is an aluminum oxide, a silicon oxide or a titanium oxide.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The element of claim 1 wherein said metal oxide is an aluminum oxide.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The element of claim 1 wherein said metal oxide is a silicon oxide.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The element of claim 1 wherein said metal oxide is a titanium oxide.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The element of claim 1 wherein said support is poly(ethylene terephthalate).

### Claim 7

A process of forming a dye transfer image comprising:
(a) imagewise-heating a dye-donor element comprising a support having on one side thereof, in order, a subbing layer and a dye layer, and
(b) transferring a dye image to a dye-receiving element to form said dye transfer image, wherein said subbing layer comprises a vacuum-deposited metal oxide, and wherein either a) an infrared-absorbing material is contained in said dye layer or a layer associated therewith, or b) the other side of the support has a slipping layer thereon.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The process of claim 7 wherein said metal oxide is an aluminum oxide, a silicon oxide or a titanium oxide.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The process of claim 7 wherein said metal oxide is an aluminum oxide.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The process of claim 7 wherein said metal oxide is a silicon oxide.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The process of claim 7 wherein said metal oxide is a titanium oxide.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The process of claim 7 wherein said support is poly(ethylene terephthalate).

### Claim 13

A thermal dye transfer assemblage comprising
(a) a dye-donor element comprising a support having on one side thereof, in order, a subbing layer and a dye layer, and
(b) a dye-receiving element comprising a support having thereon a dye image-receiving layer,
said dye-receiving element being in a superposed relationship with said dye-donor element so that said dye layer is in contact with said dye image-receiving layer,
wherein said subbing layer comprises a vacuum-deposited metal oxide, and wherein either a) an infrared-absorbing material is contained in said dye layer or a layer associated therewith, or b) the other side of the dye-donor support has a slipping layer thereon.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The assemblage of claim 13 wherein said metal oxide is an aluminum oxide, a silicon oxide or a titanium oxide.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The assemblage of claim 13 wherein said metal oxide is an aluminum oxide.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The assemblage of claim 13 wherein said metal oxide is a silicon oxide.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The assemblage of claim 13 wherein said metal oxide is a titanium oxide.

### Claim 18 (depends on 13)

The assemblage of claim 13 wherein said dye-donor support is poly(ethylene terephthalate).
