## Abstract

This present invention describes genetically transformed lettuce cells and transgenic lettuce plants which exhibit toxicity to Lepidopteran larvae.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A plant of the genus Lactuca which has been regenerated from a plant cell transformed to comprise a full length Bacillus thuringiensis crystal protein gene capable of encoding a Bacillus thuringiensis crystal protein of approximately 130-135 kD under control of a promoter such that said gene is expressible in said plant in amounts insecticidal to Lepidopteran insects.

### Claim 2

A plant cell of genus Lactuca transformed to comprise a full length Bacillus thuringiensis crystal protein gene capable of encoding a Bacillus thuringiensis crystal protein of approximately 130-135 kD under control of a promoter such that said gene is expressible in said plant cell in amounts insecticidal to Lepidopteran insects.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1 in which the plant is Lactuca sativa.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1 in which the coding sequence encodes the protein encoded by the DNA sequence 1-3471 of FIG. 1.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1 which exhibits toxicity toward Heliothis virescens.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The plant of claim 4 which exhibits toxicity toward Heliothis virescens.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The cell of claim 2 in which the plant cell is Lactuca sativa.

### Claim 8 (depends on 2)

The cell of claim 2 in which the coding sequence encodes the protein encoded by the DNA sequence 1-3471 of FIG. 1.

### Claim 9 (depends on 2)

The cell of claim 2 which exhibits toxicity toward Heliothis virescens.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The cell of claim 8 which exhibits toxicity toward Lepidopteran of the genus Heliothis virescens.
