## Abstract

An aerosol composition packaged in a steel can is described. The composition includes water, a propellant and as a corrosion inhibitor, a small amount of ammonium benzoate. The corrosion inhibitor can further be supplemented with ammonium hydroxide.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An aerosol composition packaged in a steel can comprising:
(i) from about 0.01 to about 99% water;
(ii) from about 1 to about 60% propellant; and
(iii) from about 0.1 to about 5% of a corrosion inhibitor which is a combination of ammonium benzoate and ammonium hydroxide in molar ratio from about 10:1 to about 1:10.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A composition according to claim 1 which is a hairspray and further includes from about 0.1 to about 20% by weight of a film-forming polymeric resin.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

A composition according to claim 2 wherein the film-forming polymeric resin is constituted from a monomer selected from the group consisting of vinylacetate, crotonic acid, vinyl neodecanoate, methyl vinyl ether, acrylic acid and C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 esters thereof, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, t-butyl acrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, t-butyl amino ethyl methacrylate, N-vinyl pyrrolidone and combinations thereof.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

A composition according to claim 2 wherein the film-forming polymeric resin is a polyester or polyesteramide.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

A composition according to claim 2 wherein the film-forming polymeric resin is selected from the group consisting of polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyvinylacetate, octylacrylamide/acrylates/butyl amino ethyl methacrylate copolymer, vinyl acetate/crotonic acid/vinyl neodecanoate, acrylate/acrylamide copolymer, isophthalic acid/sulfoisophthalic acid/diethylene glycol polyester and combinations thereof.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

A composition according to claim 1 wherein the molar ratio ranges from about 2:1 to about 1:2.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

A composition according to claim 1 further comprising a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alcohol present in an amount from about 1 to about 80% by weight.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

A composition according to claim 1 further comprising from about 0.001 to about 10% by weight of a neutralizing agent which is an amino alcohol.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

A composition according to claim 1 wherein the molar ratio is about 1:1.

### Claim 10

A method for inhibiting corrosion of steel cans that store aerosol compositions comprising from about 0.01 to about 99% water and from about 1 to about 60% propellant, said method comprising adding from about 0.1 to about 5% of a corrosion inhibitor combination of ammonium benzoate and ammonium hydroxide in a molar ratio from about 10:1 to about 1:10.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

A method according to claim 10 wherein the molar ratio ranges from about 2:1 to about 1:2.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

A method according to claim 11 wherein the molar ratio is about 1:1.
