## Abstract

Disclosed are lubricant compositions containing a lubricant and: (a) the reaction product of a non-metallic dihydrocarbylaromatic or monohydrocarbylaromatic sulfonate and a dialkyl or trialkyl phosphite; or (b) the reaction product of a non-metallic dialkylnaphthalene sulfonate and a dialkyl or trialkyl phosphite and further containing an acid or acid supplying component; or (c) an unreacted mixture of dialkylnaphthalene sulfonic acid and a dialkyl or trialkyl phosphite.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An additive composition for lubricating oils comprising an inorganic acid and a reaction product resulting from reacting a non-metallic dihydrocarbylaromatic sulfonate compound having a nitrogen containing moiety selected from the group consisting of alkanolamine salts, polyalkenylene diamines, etheral diamines, aryldiamines, diaryldiamines, and alkylated diamines or a monohydrocarbylaromatic sulfonate compound having a nitrogen containing moiety the group consisting of ammonium, amines, alkanolamine salts, and alkylated amines and a dihydrocarbyl or trihydrocarbyl phosphite in a mole ratio of sulfonate compound to phosphite compound of between about 10:1 and about 1:10 at a temperature between about 60.degree. C. and about 200.degree..

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The additive composition of claim 1 wherein the non-metallic dialkylnaphthalene sulfonate compound is an ammonium salt.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The additive composition of claim 1 wherein the non-metallic dihydrocarbylaromatic sulfonate compound is ammonium dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The additive composition of claim 1 wherein the dihydrocarbyl or trihydrocarbyl phosphite has the structural formula
(R.sub.1 O).sub.2 POR.sub.2
where R.sub.1 is a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 18 carbon atoms and R.sub.2 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 18 carbon atoms.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The additive composition of claim 1 wherein the dihydrocarbyl or trihydrocarbyl phosphite is selected from the group consisting of oleyl, phenyl, nonyl phenyl, octylphenyl, 2-ethyl hexyl, 1,3-dimethylbutyl, tridecyl, isodecyl, octyl, and butyl, and mixed phosphites thereof.

The additive composition of claim 1 wherein the acid is sulfuric acid.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

A lubricant composition comprising a hydrocarbon lubricant and between about 0.01% and about 10% by weight of the total composition of the reaction product of claim 1.

A lubricant composition comprising a hydrocarbon lubricant and between about 0.01% and about 10% by weight of the total composition of the reaction product of claim 2.

### Claim 9 (depends on 3)

A lubricant composition comprising a hydrocarbon lubricant and between about 0.01% and about 10% by weight of the total composition of the reaction product of claim 3.

A lubricant composition comprising a hydrocarbon lubricant and between about 0.01% and about 10% by weight of the total composition of the reaction product of claim 5.

A lubricant composition comprising a hydrocarbon lubricant and between about 0.01% and about 10% by weight of the total composition of the reaction product of claim 6.
