## Abstract

A process for the treatment of contaminants using metal scavenger is disclosed. The metal scavengers individually comprise a polyamine derivative and a polyethyleneimine derivative. The polyamine derivative is formed of a polyamine having a molecular weight not higher than 500 and contains, per molecule of the polyamine, at least one dithiocarboxyl group or a salt thereof as an N-substituting group substituted for an active hydrogen atom of the polyamine. The polyethyleneimine derivative is formed from a polyethyleneimine having an average molecular weight of at least 5,000 and contains, per molecule of the polyethyleneimine, at least one dithiocarboxyl group or a salt thereof as an N-substituting group substituted for an active hydrogen atom of the polyethyleneimine.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A process for the treatment of a solid contaminant containing at least one heavy metal, which comprises:
adding an immobilizing effective amount of metal scavenger to the solid contaminant and mixing said solid contaminant and said metal scavenger in the presence of water to immobilize the heavy metal, said metal scavenger comprising:
a polyamine derivative formed from a polyamine having a molecular weight not higher than 500, said polyamine derivative containing, per molecule of said polyamine, at least one dithiocarboxyl group or a salt thereof as a N-substituting group substituted for an active hydrogen atom of said polyamine; and
a polyethylene derivative formed from a polyethyleneimine having an average molecular weight of at least 5,000, said polyethylene derivative containing, per molecule of said polyethyleneimine, at least one dithiocarboxyl group substituted for an active hydrogen atom of said polyethyleneimine, wherein the mixing ratio of the polyamine derivative to the polyethyleneimine derivative is from about 9:1-7:3 by weight, and wherein from about 43% to about 99% of the substitutable active hydrogen atoms of the polyethyeleneimine and from about 56% to about 100% of the substitutable active hydrogen atoms of the polyamine are substituted by the dithiocarboxyl group.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the contaminant is fly ash.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The process according to claim 2 wherein about 1 part of the metal scavenger is added to about 50 parts of fly ash in the presence of about 10 parts of water.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the contaminant is slag.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The process according to claim 4 wherein about 1 part of the metal scavenger is added to about 100 parts of slag in the presence of about 10 parts of water.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the contaminant is soil.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the contaminant is sludge.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The process according to claim 7 wherein about 0.1 part of the metal scavenger is mixed with about 50 parts of sludge having a water content of about 41 parts.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the salt of the dithiocarboxyl group is used and is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal salts, alkaline earth metal salts, and ammonium salts.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the polyamine has a molecular weight of 60-250.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the polyamine is selected from the group consisting of alkylenediamines; polyalkylenepolyamines; phenylenediamine; o-, m- and p-xylenediamines; iminobispropylamine; monomethylaminopropylamine; methyliminobispropylamine; 1,3-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane; 3,5-diaminochlorobenzene; melamine; 1-aminoethylpiperazine; diaminophenyl ether; tolidine; m-toluylenediamine, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the polyethyleneimine has an average molecular weight of 10,000-200,000.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The process according to claim 12, wherein the polyethyleneimine has an average molecular weight of 20,000-150,000.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1 which comprises adding the immobilizing amount of said metal scavenger in an aqueous solution in an amount about 1.2-3.0 times as much as that required to scavenge said heavy metals in said solid contaminant.
