## Abstract

Absorbable dusting powders suitable for medical, consumer and industrial applications such as lubricating gloves and medical apparatus are prepared by treating starch with a hypochlorite to remove protein and oxidize some of the hydroxyl groups. The modified starch dusting powders are free flowing and are characterized by a protein content of less than about 0.15% by weight and hydroxyl groups oxidized to a level of from about 0.03 to about 0.5% by weight. Protein content can be reduced further by washing with water.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A modified starch composition comprising a protein content of less than about 0.15% by weight and from about 0.03 to about 0.5% by weight oxidized hydroxyl groups.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the protein content is less than about 0.05% by weight.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 having a degree of cross-linking of hydroxyl groups characterized by bound phosphorus levels of less than about 1200 ppm.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 having a USP sedimentation value from about 45 to about 100 milliliters.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 further comprising magnesium oxide in an amount less than about 2% by weight dry substance.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

A method of using the composition of claim 1 as a medical lubricant comprising applying the composition to the surface of a medical apparatus.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein said medical apparatus is selected from the group consisting of gloves, catheters, tubing and drains.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

A method of using the composition of claim 1 as a lubricant for gloves comprising applying the composition to the gloves.
