## Abstract

Articles comprised of bioactive agents coupled to or repelled by a graft polymer (made, for example, from monomers such as N-(3-aminopropyl) methacrylamide hydrochloride (APMA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylamide (AAm)m and acrylic acid (AA)) which is in turn bonded to a polymeric substrate surface. The articles are useful as thromboresistant and/or antimicrobial medical devices.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An article for use in contact with blood or blood products, the article including at least one biocompatible polymeric surface for contacting blood or blood products, the polymeric surface having thereon a first layer and a second layer, the first layer comprising a graft co-polymer grafted onto the polymeric surface by co-polymerizing a first vinyl monomer selected from the group consisting of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, acrylamide, acrylic acid, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with a second vinyl monomer of N-(3-aminopropyl) methacrylamide hydrochloride which provides the graft co-polymer with pendant primary amine groups, the second layer comprising a bioactive agent selected from the group consisting of antibiotics, antimicrobials, anticoagulants and albumin-binding dyes coupled to the graft co-polymer by coupling to its primary amine groups.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1 wherein the bioactive agent is ionically coupled to the graft co-polymer.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1 wherein the bioactive agent is covalently coupled to the graft co-polymer.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1 wherein the bioactive agent is an antibiotic.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface is polyurethane.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface is polyetherurethane.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1 wherein the graft copolymer includes 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid as the first vinyl monomer.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1 wherein the bioactive agent is gentamycin.
