Pneumatic member and related attachment elements for cushions, seats, foundations and the like

A pneumatic cushioning and load-supporting spring-device for bedding and seat cushions comprising:

• a first rigid sleeve,
• a second rigid sleeve having a hollow defined therein into which said first rigid sleeve is received to move along a longitudinal axis defined by said sleeves when joined, said second rigid sleeve having a diameter greater than that of said first rigid sleeve,
• elastomeric means for forming an air seal between said first and second rigid sleeves to define an air cavity within said hollow within which air is compressed upon relative axial movement of said first and second members, and for biasing said first and second rigid sleeves apart, said elastomeric means being fixed to each of said first and second sleeves and stretching under movement of said sleeves along said axis, and
• at least one air vent communicating with said hollow for venting and admitting air thereto.

A pneumatic cushioning and load-supporting spring-device for bedding and seat cushion assemblies comprising:

• a first cylindrical tube having a closed outboard end and an open inboard end,
• a second cylindrical tube of greater diameter than said first tube having a closed outboard end and an open inboard end,
• said first tube inboard end being received within said second tube to move along a longitudinal axis defined by said tubes when joined,
• a foot element formed on an outboard end of one of said first and second tubes for attachment to an assembly base,
• a head element formed on an outboard end of the other of said first and second tubes for attachment to an assembly top,
• said first and second tubes being concentrically overlapped along said outboard ends in an embracing sliding engagement forming an air seal between said first and second tubes and defining an air cavity within which air is compressed upon relative axial movement of said first and second tubes,
• coil spring means for biasing said first and second tubes apart, and
• at least one air vent communicating with said cavity for venting and admitting air thereto.

A pneumatic cushioning and load-supporting spring-device for bedding and seat cushions comprising:

• a first cylindrical tube having a closed outboard end and an open inboard end,
• a second cylindrical tube of greater diameter than said first tube having a closed outboard end and an open inboard end, said first tube inboard end being received within said second tube to move along a longitudinal axis defined by said tubes when joined,
• said first and second tubes being concentrically overlapped along said inboard ends in an embracing sliding engagement forming an air seal between said first and second tubes and defining an air cavity within which air is compressed upon relative axial movement of said first and second tubes,
• a coil spring for biasing said first and second tubes apart located within said cavity,
• a foot element formed on an outboard end of one of said first and second tubes for attachment to a frame base, said foot element comprising a base from which depends a pair of opposed sides, said sides having a flange extending inboard toward said axis, said flanges being adapted to be received in slots formed in a rail which is part of said frame base, with said foot base resting on the rail when said flanges are so received in the slots, and an ear extending outboard away from said axis and formed at the bottom edge of at least one of said depending sides, said ear being adapted to receive a staple to fix said ear to a frame rail,
• a head element formed on an outboard end of the other of said first and second tubes for attachment to a frame top, said head element comprising a dish, with said dish centered on said axis and opening outboard relative to its associated tube, said dish having a rim, and a plurality of substantially rigid clips formed about said rim from a portion of said dish, said clips each having a stem deflectable at a base formed integral with said disk, a c-shaped channel formed on a free end of said stem into which channel a grid wire is received, and a c-shaped trough formed along said rim in opposed relation to said c-shaped stem channel into which trough the same grid wire is received, said trough and channel being adapted to snap-fit about opposite sides of the grid wire to hold the wire therebetween thereby attaching said dish to a wire in a wire grid forming the frame top, and
• at least one air vent communicating with said hollow for venting and admitting air thereto.

A bedding product comprising:

• a rectangular frame with cross rails spanning said frame,
• a wire grid,
• a plurality of pneumatic cushioning and load-supporting members (pneumatic members) mounted on said base and supporting said wire grid,
• said pneumatic members each comprising a first cylindrical tube having a closed outboard end and an open inboard end, a second cylindrical tube of greater diameter than said first tube having a closed outboard end and an open inboard end, said first tube inboard end being received within said second tube to move along a longitudinal axis defined by said tubes when joined, said first and second tubes being concentrically overlapped along said inboard ends in an embracing sliding engagement forming an air seal between said first and second tubes and defining an air cavity within which air is compressed upon relative axial movement of said first and second tubes,
• a coil spring located within said cavity for biasing said first and second tubes apart, a foot element formed on an outboard end of one of said first and second tubes for attachment to said frame, said foot element comprising a base from which depends a pair of opposed sides, said sides having a flange extending inboard toward said axis, said flanges being adapted to be received in slots formed in a cross rail with said foot base resting on said cross rail when said flanges are so received in said slots, and an ear extending outboard away from said axis and formed at the bottom edge of at least one of said depending sides, said ear being adapted to receive a staple to fix said ear to a frame member, a head element formed on an outboard end of the other of said first and second tubes for attachment to said wire grid, said head element comprising a dish with said dish centered on said axis and opening outboard relative to its associated tube, said dish having a rim, and clips formed about said rim from a portion of said dish, said clips each having a stem formed integral with said dish, said stem being deflectable at a stem base, a c-shaped channel formed on a free end of said stem into which channel a grid wire is received, and a c-shaped trough formed along said rim in opposed relation to said c-shaped stem channel into which trough the same grid wire is received, said trough and channel being adapted to snap-fit about opposite sides of the grid wire to hold said wire therebetween thereby attaching said dish to a wire in said wire grid, and at least one air vent communicating with each said cavity for venting and admitting air thereto.

A bedding or seat cushion product comprising:

• a frame,
• a plurality of pneumatic cushioning and load-supporting devices which are formed independent of said frame and then mounted on said frame to form a load-supporting surface,
• said pneumatic devices each comprising a first elongated member, a second elongated member having a hollow defined therein into which said first member is received to move along a longitudinal axis defined by said members when joined, means for forming an air seal between said first and second members to define an air cavity within said hollow within which air is compressed upon relative axial movement of said first and second members, means for biasing said first and second members apart, and at least one air vent communicating with said hollow for venting and admitting air thereto,
• said pneumatic devices each further including a foot element formed on an outboard end of one of said first and second members for attachment to said frame, and a head element formed on an outboard end of the other of said first and second members.

A resilient load-supporting assembly for bedding and seat cushions comprising:

• a base,
• a plurality of individual pneumatic springs mountable on said base to form a load-supporting surface,
• said pneumatic springs each comprising, a sleeve,
• a piston received within said sleeve,
• means biasing said piston and sleeve apart to a rest position,
• means for defining an enclosed cavity within which air is compressed under movement of said piston, and
• at least one air vent for allowing air to leave and enter said cavity.

A resilient load support assembly for a bedding product comprising:

• a base,
• a plurality of pneumatic springs which are formed non-integral with said base and which are mounted on said base,
• said pneumatic springs each comprising a first tube closed at one end with a foot at said one end, said first tube being open at its other end,
• a second tube closed at one end with a head at said one end and open at its other end, said second tube having a diameter different from said first tube,
• said first and second tubes overlapped at said open ends along a common axis,
• an elastic ring joining said first and second tubes in the area of overlap, said elastic ring serving to bias said tubes to a rest position, and also define an air cavity within said tubes,
• and at least one air vent for allowing air to leave and enter said cavity.

A pneumatic spring for a bedding or seat cushion product comprising:

• a sleeve,
• a piston received within said sleeve,
• an elastic member located between said sleeve and piston and being fixed to each of said sleeve and piston, said elastic member joining said piston and sleeve and biasing said piston and sleeve to a rest position,
• said sleeve, piston, and elastic member together defining an enclosed cavity within which air is compressed under movement of said piston,
• and at least one air vent for allowing air to leave and enter said cavity.

A pneumatic spring for use in the construction of a bedding product, said pneumatic spring being an independent unit a plurality of which can be arranged together and mounted on a base to form the aforesaid bedding product, comprising:

• a first tube closed at one end with a foot at said one end, said first tube being open at its other end,
• a second tube closed at one end with a head at said one end and open at its other end, said second tube having a diameter different from said first tube,
• said first and second tubes overlapped at said open ends along a common axis in an embracing sliding engagement forming a seal between said tubes and also defining air cavity within said tubes,
• a spring member biasing said tubes apart, and
• at least one air vent for allowing air to leave and enter said cavity.
