In an evaporative emission control system for an internal combustion engine having a fuel tank, an intake passage, and a throttle valve arranged in said intake passage, said evaporative emission control system including a charcoal canister for adsorbing evaporative fuel generated from said fuel tank, a communication passage communicating between said charcoal canister and a portion of said intake passage downstream of said throttle valve, and a first control valve arranged in said communication passage for controlling supply of said evaporative fuel at a flow rate dependent on an operating parameter of said engine,
- the improvement comprising:
- a bypass passage bypassing said first control valve and having a maximum flow rate smaller than the maximum flow rate of said first control valve;
- a second control valve arranged in said bypass passage for controlling opening and closing of said bypass passage;
- and
- control means for closing said first control valve and at the same time opening said second control valve, when said engine is in a warming up state.
