Carbon-containing black glass compositions of matter having the empirical formula SiC.sub.x O.sub.y and derived from the polymer precursors having the residue ##STR1##

A polymer precursor to a black glass ceramic containing the moieties ##STR8## where R.sup.o is an alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms
- R" is H, an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or an alkene having 2 to 20 carbon atoms.
A polymer precursor to a black glass ceramic containing the moieties ##STR9## where R.sup.o is an alkene group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms
