Abstract
The invention relates to optically active compounds represented by the general formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, Q.sub.1, Q.sub.2, Q.sub.3, and M are defined as in the specification, methods and intermediates for their preparation, liquid crystal compositions comprising at least one optically active compound of formula I and their use in electrooptical display, switching and modulation devices.
Claims15
An optically active compound exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase represented by the general formula I:
- ##STR117## wherein R.sub.1 is an alkyl group of 3-14 carbon atoms;
- R.sub.2 and R.sub.3, which may be the same or different, are independently a lower alkyl group of 1-3 carbon atoms;
- R.sub.4 is an alkyl group of 1-10 carbon atoms;
- Q.sub.1 is a single bond or an ether group;
- Q.sub.2 is an ether group or a carboxylic acid ester group and Q.sub.3 is an ether group;
- M is ##STR118## X and Y are independently a single bond, a carboxylic acid ester group or a methyleneoxy group and ##STR119## are p-phenylene groups;
- the carbon atoms with the asterisk (*) denote asymmetric carbon atoms.
