Abstract
An electrical transdermal drug applicator provides enhanced drug flow to the bloodstream of the subject by delivering a primary drug into a subject's circulatory system for therapeutic purposes, and delivering from the same or other reservoir a non-therapeutic counteracting agent to the skin of the patient which induces flow enhancement and allows delivery of the primary drug systemically over a longer period of time and in greater quantity than heretofore appeared possible using electric current.
Claims23
A method of enhancing delivery of at least one drug to the bloodstream of a patient over an extended period of time comprising:
- providing a transdermal drug applicator comprising an electrical circuit operable in different operational cycles and having reservoir means containing one or more drugs at least one of which is a therapeutic drug to be applied to the bloodstream of a patient through the skin, a source of DC potential and a return electrode forming an electrical circuit return electrode when the reservoir means and the electrode are applied to the skin of the patient and interface therewith,
- applying the transdermal drug applicator with said reservoir means and the return electrode to the skin of the patient and interfacing therewith,
- operating the electrical circuit in different operational cycles to effect application of the therapeutic drug or drugs into the bloodstream of the patient through the skin by electrokinetic processes in dependence upon the drug to be administered to the patient, and
- alternately or concurrently with said operational cycles operating the electrical circuit maintaining the negative surface charge density of the blood vessel walls and blood of the patient at least in a region where the transdermal drug applicator is applied to the skin of the patient.
A method of enhancing the delivery of a primary therapeutic drug through the skin and into the circulatory system of an animal body by an electrokinetic phenomena, comprising the steps of:
- a) contacting a reservoir of an electrical transdermal drug applicator containing a primary therapeutic drug and a counteracting agent with said skin of the animal body, wherein the counteracting agent comprises a substance known to increase the negative charge on cell surfaces;
- and
- b) activating the electrical transdermal drug applicator to electrokinetically deliver the primary therapeutic drug and the counteracting agent to the animal body, wherein the counteracting agent is delivered locally to an area of said skin proximate the region where the reservoir contacts the skin to enhance the delivery of the primary therapeutic drug into the circulatory system of the animal body.
A method of enhancing the delivery of a primary therapeutic drug through the skin, and into the circulatory system of an animal body by a electrokinetic phenomena, comprising the steps of:
- a) contacting a first reservoir located within an electrical transdermal drug applicator and containing a primary therapeutic drug with the skin of the animal;
- b) contacting a second reservoir located within the electrical transdermal drug applicator and containing a counteracting agent with the skin of the animal body, wherein the counteracting agent comprises a substance known to increase the negative charge on cell surfaces;
- and
- c) activating the electrical transdermal drug applicator to electrokinetically deliver simultaneously or alternately the primary drug and the counteracting agent to the animal body, wherein the counteracting agent is delivered locally to an area of said skin proximate the region where the first and second reservoirs contact the skin to enhance the delivery of the primary therapeutic drug into the circulatory system of the animal body.
