Abstract
Phthalaldehyde tetraalkyl acetals are prepared by electrochemical oxidation of substituted xylenes and used as stable compounds for storing phthalaldehydes.
Claims7
A process for preparing phthalaldehyde tetraalkyl acetals of the formula I ##STR3## wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl,
- R.sub.2 is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 -alkyl and C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 -alkyl-cycloalkyl, said groups bearing alkyl substituents on the .alpha.-C atom, and
- R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 -alkyl and C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 -alkyl-cycloalkyl, said groups bearing alkyl substituents on the .alpha.-C atom, or R.sup.3 is hydrogen,
- which comprises electrochemically oxidizing substituted xylenes of the formula II ##STR4## where R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 have the meanings specified above, in an alcohol R.sup.4 OH where R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl.
