Abstract
Mixtures of 2-methyl-isothiazolin-3-one (5H-MIT) and 5-chloro-2-methylisothiazolin-3-one (5Cl-MIT), are prepared by the chlorination of N-methyl-3-mercaptopropionamide (MMPA) with chlorine in a halogenated solvent in continuous operation.

Process for the preparation of mixtures of 2-methyl-isothiazolin-3-one (5H-MIT) and 5-chloro-2-methyl-isothiazolin-3-one (5Cl-MIT), wherein the ratio of 5Cl-MIT to 5H-MIT is between 0.1 and 10.0 and wherein the yield loss due to 4,5-dichloro-MIT does not exceed 10%, which comprises chlorinating N-methyl-3-mercaptopropionamide (MMPA) with chlorine in a halogenated solvent in continuous operation.
