Abstract
A tolan derivative suitable for use in a liquid crystal composition represented by the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a straight chain alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, A is either ##STR2## or a single bond, and X is hydrogen or fluorine.

A tolan derivative represented by the general formula:
- ##STR8## wherein R is a straight chain alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, A is either ##STR9## or a single bond, and X is hydrogen or fluorine.
A liquid crystal composition, including a tolan derivative represented by the general formula:
- ##STR16## wherein R is a straight chain alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, A is either ##STR17## or a single bond, and X is hydrogen or fluorine.
A liquid crystal display cell including a pair of spaced apart opposed electrode substrates, a liquid crystal material in the space between the substrates, and spacer means for separating the substrates, the liquid crystal material including at least one of a compound represented by the general formula:
- ##STR20## wherein R is a straight chain alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, A is either ##STR21## or a single bond, and X is hydrogen or fluorine.
