Abstract
This invention relates to novel photooxidation products, and derivatives thereof, of Merocyanine 540, their preparation and their uses as anticancer and antiviral agents.

A compound having the formula ##STR4## or optical isomers or mixtures thereof wherein:
- R.sup.1 =H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 linear or branched alkyl, or CH.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.5 ;
- R.sup.2 =H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 linear or branched alkyl, or CH.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.5 ;
- R.sup.3 =H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 linear or branched alkyl, or CH.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.5 ;
- X=O, S, or NH;
- Y=S;
- and
- Z=O, S, or NH;
- or
- a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
