Abstract
A new class of synthetic triglycerides, those having at least one short-chain (C.sub.2 -C.sub.5) fatty acid on a glycerol backbone, has been developed. These synthetic triglycerides (or structured lipids) are particularly useful in treating patients with intestinal problems.
Claims3
A synthetic triglyceride of the form ##STR2## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 meet the following criteria:
- A. R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 are fatty acids with at least one, but not all, of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 being a short-chain (C.sub.2 -C.sub.5) fatty acid having 2-5 carbon atoms in the carbon backbone;
- B. R.sub.1 is not the same fatty acid as R.sub.3 ;
- C. the non-short-chain fatty acids are selected from the group consisting of long-chain (C.sub.14 -C.sub.22) and medium-chain (C.sub.6 -C.sub.12) fatty acids, with at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 being a medium-chain fatty acid;
- and
- D. R.sub.2 is a medium-chain or short chain fatty acid.
