Abstract
New Zaragozic acids have been isolated from a culture of MF5465. These compounds and their derivatives are active as squalene synthetase inhibitors and are useful in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.

A compound of the structural formula (I) ##STR17## or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR18## R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR19## Z.sup.1, Z.sup.2 and Z.sup.3 are each independently selected from;
- a) H;
- b) C.sub.1-5 alkyl;
- c) C.sub.1-5 alkyl substituted with a member of the group consisting of:
- i) phenyl,
- ii) phenyl substituted with methyl, methoxy, halogen (Cl, Br, I, F) or hydroxy;
- with the proviso that when R.sup.2 is ##STR20## then R.sup.1 is neither ##STR21##
