A method of treatment of postoperative and posttraumatic patients for improving the glutamine content in skeletal muscle, said method comprising intravenous administration to a patient in need thereof of a solution consisting essentially of an amino acid mixture, with the proviso that said solution excludes glutamine, and alpha-ketoglutarate as the sole active agent for improving said glutamine content and optionally glucose and/or fat, wherein said alpha-ketoglutarate is administered in an amount sufficient to at least partially prevent reduction of said glutamine content in said patients.
