Abstract
A process is provided for hydrolysis of fluorinated ion exchange membranes. The membrane is contacted with an aqueous solution containing a hydrocarbon having ether, epoxy or ketone linkages and an alcohol group, preferably 1-methoxy 2-propanol, for a period of time sufficient to perform the hydrolysis of the precursor groups. The membrane is useful in a fuel cell or in an electrolytic cell, particularly a chloralkali cell.
Claims7
A process for hydrolyzing a fluorinated ion exchange membrane having sulfonyl or carboxyl precursor groups comprising contacting said membrane with an aqueous solution comprising of at least one compound having an ether or epoxy;
- linkage and an alcohol group for a period of time to hydrolyze the sulfonyl precursor groups or the carboxyl precursor groups or both to sulfonate groups and carboxylate groups, respectively.
