Abstract
There are disclosed novel benzofuran derivatives of the formula: ##STR1## Also disclosed are a herbicidal composition containing the above benzofuran derivative as an active ingredient and a method for exterminating undesired weeds by the application of a herbicidally effective amount of the above benzofuran derivative to an area where the undesired weeds grow or will grow.

A compound of the formula:
- ##STR10## wherein A is hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine;
- X is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine;
- Y is methyl optionally substituted with halogen;
- Z is methyl or amino;
- R is halo(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylthio(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, amino(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylamino(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)acylamino(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylsulfonylamino(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 acyl, hydroxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)acyloxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, hydroxyimino(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxyimino(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, cyano, hydrazono(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylhydrazono(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, phenylhydrazono(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl (wherein the phenyl is optionally substituted with C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkoxy, halo(C.sub. 1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, halo(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy, halogen, nitro, cyano or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylthio), carboxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkoxycarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylaminocarbonyl or phenylaminocarbonyl (wherein the phenyl is optionally substituted with C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkoxy, halo(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, halo(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy, halogen, nitro, cyano or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylthio).
