A gas spring with a piston reciprocable in a chamber of a casing, a sealing assembly at the rear end of the casing through which the piston rod extends, and an end cap closing the rear end of the casing. The sealing assembly has a reinforcing ring having a sealing ring on one side and a wiper on the other side. The sealing ring and wiper are portions of a single body of elastomeric material molded to the reinforcing ring and integrally connected through one or more openings in the reinforcing ring. The casing wall is rolled radially inwardly over the sealing assembly into pressure contact with the reinforcing ring so that the sealing assembly becomes in effect an end cap for the front end of the casing. The rear end of the casing is rolled over the rear end cap by swaging into pressure contact with the end cap. A filler valve is disposed in the end cap. In use, the piston is normally retained on the rod by an enlargement having a diameter larger than the bore of the rod bearing so that in the unlikely event the piston separates from the rod the enlargement will be embedded in the bearing to retain the rod in the casing. If the piston separates from the rod a port in the rod vents to the atmosphere the compressed gas in the chamber.
A gas spring comprising, an elongated tubular casing having a chamber therein for containing gas under pressure and an annular wall defining an opening at one end of said chamber, a bearing in said chamber adjacent said one end of said casing and having a through bore for slidably receiving a rod, a piston in said chamber and upstream of said bearing and having a central through hole, a rod received in said bore through said bearing for generally axial reciprocation therein and projecting from said chamber through said opening, and an enlargement connecting said rod with said piston for reciprocation in unison therewith and having an outside diameter larger than the diameter of said bore through said bearing and the diameter of said hole through said piston, overlapping said hole through said piston, and constructed and arranged so that if in use of the gas spring said piston separates from said rod said enlargement will pass through said piston and become embedded in said bearing to retain said rod, and a sealing ring of a flexible and compressible material downstream of said bearing and adjacent said one end of said casing and providing a seal between said casing and said rod to retain compressed gas in said chamber.
A gas spring comprising an elongated tubular casing having a chamber therein for containing gas under pressure and an annular wall defining an opening at one end of said casing, an axially reciprocable piston in said chamber having a rod projecting from said chamber through said opening, a sealing assembly at said one end of said casing providing a seal between said annular wall and said rod, said sealing assembly having a reinforcing ring encircling said rod in supporting relationship to said annular wall, a sealing ring of flexible, compressible material secured to one side of said reinforcing ring and having sealing contact with said annular wall and with said rod, and a wiper of flexible, compressible material secured to the opposite side of said reinforcing ring, encircling said rod and having wiping contact with said rod, a bearing within and carried by said casing, has a bore, said rod being slidably received in said bearing for reciprocation therein, said piston comprising a separate washer received on said rod and with an outside diameter larger than the bore through said bearing and a central through hole, an enlargement retaining said washer on said rod, overlying said hole through said washer, having an outside diameter larger than the diameter of said bore through said bearing and the diameter of said central hole through said washer and being constructed and arranged so that if in use of the gas spring said washer separates from said rod said enlargement will be embedded in said bearing to retain said rod in said casing.
