Abstract
The invention relates to a stereospecific derivative of formula: ##STR1## in which R is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 thioalkyl. The invention also relates to the use of these compounds for the manufacture of stereospecific retinal or retinoic acid, as well as to a process for preparing the retinoids of formula (I). The invention finally relates to a cosmetic or pharmaceutcial composition which contains at least one compound of formula (I) in a suitable vehicle; the pharmaceutical composition according to the invention may be used for treating dermatological, rheumatic, respiratory or ophthalmological conditions.

A process for preparing a stereospecific retinoid having the formula ##STR55## wherein R is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 thioalkyl radical, said process comprising reacting a dithianepropenol having the formula ##STR56## wherein R has the meaning given above with ethynyl-.beta.-ionol having the formula ##STR57## in the presence of an organomagnesium compound, so as to obtain an acetylenic compound having the formula ##STR58## wherein R has the meaning given above, hydrogenating the acetylenic bond of the compound of formula VIII so as to obtain a diol having the formula ##STR59## wherein R has the meaning given above and reducing said diol of formula V using a "low-valency" titanium.
A process for the treatment of acne or psoriasis comprising administering to a person suffering from acne or psoriasis, at a daily dosage of approximately 0.01 mg to approximately 100 mg/kg of body weight, in 1 to 3 doses, a stereospecific retinoic derivative having the formula ##STR60## wherein R is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 thioalkyl radical.
A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of acne or psoriasis comprising in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier a stereospecific retinoic derivative having the formula ##STR61## wherein R is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 thioalkyl radical, said retinoic derivative being present in an amount ranging from 0.0001 to approximately 5 percent by weight based on the total weight of said composition.
A cosmetic composition for body and hair hygiene comprising in a cosmetically acceptable carrier a stereospecific retinoic derivative having the formula ##STR62## wherein R is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 thioalkyl radical, said retinoic derivative being present in an amount ranging from 0.0001 to approximately 3 percent by weight based on the total weight of said composition.
