Abstract
Monoalkyl phosphinate and monoalkyl phosphonate derivatives of low molecular weight water soluble polymers are preferentially prepared by copolymerizing hypophosphorous acid, monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid(s) and an effective amount of a C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid.

A water soluble polymer mixture containing polymeric monoalkyl phosphinates, polymeric monoalkyl phosphonates and polymeric dialkyl phosphinates wherein at least 40 percent of the incorporated phosphorus is present as polymeric monoalkyl phosphinate and polymeric monoalkyl phosphonate.
