Abstract
There is provided a clutch/brake unit having aligned input and output shafts, clutch disks partially immersed in oil carried by the input shaft, brake disks partially immersed in oil fixed to the housing, and two series of friction disks also partially immersed in oil each series of friction discs secured to the output shaft and each series engagable by separate DC voltage coils. A fan is provided which is rotatable with the input shaft to provide cooling air to the clutch/brake unit. The operation of the clutch/brake unit is controlled by a computer which controls the relationship of the output shafts speed in relation to time.
Claims14
A clutch/brake drive for an apparatus for transmitting power from a drive means to a machine, said clutch/brake drive comprising:
- a stationary housing;
- output means for transmitting rotation from said clutch/brake drive;
- said output means operably associated with said machine and rotatably mounted in said housing;
- input means for transmitting rotation to said clutch/brake drive;
- said input means operably associated with said drive means and rotatably mounted in said housing;
- selectively operable brake means for prohibiting rotation of said output means with respect to said housing, said brake means disposed between said output means and said housing, said brake means being capable of being positioned in an applied or released condition;
- selectively operable clutch means for locking said input means to said output means, said clutch means disposed between said input means and said output means, said clutch means being capable of being positioned in an engaged or disengaged condition;
- spring means for biasing said selectively operable brake means into said applied position;
- said spring means also biasing said selectively operable clutch means into said engaged position;
- and
- means for controlling said selectively operable brake and clutch means such that said drive means drives said machine along a specified speed/time relationship, said controlling means being capable of self-adjusting to meet said specified speed/time relationship.
A clutch/brake drive for an apparatus comprising:
- a stationary housing;
- an output shaft for transmitting rotation from said clutch/brake drive, said output shaft rotatably mounted in said housing;
- an input shaft for transmitting rotation to said clutch/brake drive, said input shaft rotatably mounted in said housing;
- selectively operable brake for prohibiting rotation of said output shaft with respect to said housing, said brake disposed between said output shaft and said housing, said brake having a plurality of interleaved first friction disks alternately splined, respectively, to said output shaft and said stationary housing and capable of being positioned in an applied or released condition;
- selectively operable clutch for locking said input shaft to said output shaft, said clutch disposed between said input shaft and said output shaft, said clutch having a plurality of interleaved second friction disks alternately splined, respectively, to said input shaft and said output shaft and being capable of being positioned in an engaged or disengaged condition;
- spring means for biasing said selectively operable brake into said applied position and said selectively operable clutch into said engaged position;
- and
- means for controlling said selectively operable brake and clutch such that said input shaft drives said output shaft along a specified speed/time relationship, said controlling means being capable of self-adjusting to meet said specified speed/time relationship.
