Abstract
A nuclear reactor plant is provided in which the reactor coolant system contains a dissolved solution of enriched boric acid. The boron-10 to boron-11 atomic isotope ratio of the enriched boric acid solution is greater than 19.8:80.2 at the start of the reactor core cycle. The nuclear reactor plant design provides for minimal mixing between the reactor coolant solution containing the enriched boric acid solution and the natural boric acid solution used during refueling operations.
Claims14
A process for controlling the concentration of an enriched boron-10 boric acid solution in a reactor coolant system including a reactor vessel in a nuclear reactor, the coolant system containing an enriched boric acid solution having a boron-10 to boron-11 atomic isotope ratio of at least 20:80, the process comprising:
- (a) diverting a quantity of boron-10 material from the coolant system to a boron-10 storing means and storing a fraction of the quantity therein to such an extent that when a plurality of fuel rods are substantially depleted, the fluid exiting the boron-10 storing means will be a depleted coolant, the depleted coolant containing a low concentration of the boron-10 material;
- (b) recirculating the depleted coolant into the coolant system;
- (c) shutting down the reactor vessel with natural boric acid comprising opening the reactor vessel and flooding the coolant system with a refueling water storage tank solution which is comprised of a natural boric acid solution, thereby creating a refueling fluid comprised of said refueling storage tank solution and said depleted coolant;
- (d) refueling the vessel and transferring the refueling fluid solution to the refueling water storage tank;
- (e) closing the vessel;
- (f) draining the refueling fluid to a waste solution receiving means thereby leaving a remaining solution in the coolant system sufficient to ensure that the plurality of fuel rods are properly cooled and controlled;
- and
- (g) displacing said remaining solution with a replacement solution, said replacement solution containing an enriched boron-10 boric acid solution which contains a boron-10 to boron-11 isotope ratio of at least 30:70.
The process of claim 28 wherein the coolant system contains the enriched boric acid such that the ratio of the boron-10 to boron-11 atomic isotope is at about 75:25 at the beginning of the reactor cycle.
A process for operating a nuclear reactor using a boric acid coolant solution, comprising:
- (a) circulating an enriched boron-10 boric acid solution through a reactor coolant system including a reactor vessel housing a plurality of fuel rods, the enriched boron-10 boric acid solution having a boron-10 to boron-11 atomic isotope ratio of at least 20:80;
- (b) load following the reactor comprising directing the enriched boric acid solution to a boron-10 storing means and storing boron-10 in the boron-10 storing means, and recirculating the enriched boric acid solution to the reactor coolant system;
- (c) continuing the load following of step (b) until the end of a reactor core cycle and creating a depleted enriched coolant by decreasing the concentration of the boron-10 in the reactor coolant system to 10 ppm or less;
- (d) shutting down the reactor vessel comprising opening the reactor vessel and flooding the coolant system with a refueling water storage tank solution comprising a natural boric acid solution, thereby creating a refueling fluid comprising the natural boric acid and the depleted enriched coolant;
- (e) refueling the vessel and transferring the refueling fluid to the refueling water storage tank;
- (f) closing the vessel;
- (g) draining the refueling fluid to a level sufficient to ensure that the plurality of fuel rods are properly cooled and controlled, thus leaving a remaining solution in the vessel;
- and
- (h) displacing the remaining solution with a replacement solution, wherein the replacement solution is an enriched boric acid solution containing a boron-10 to boron-11 isotope ratio of at least 30:70.
