Disclosed is the isolation and cloning of genes encoding glucanohydrolase enzymes and the expression and secretion of exogenous glucanase gene products in host cells.

A purified and isolated polypeptide product of the expression in a genetically transformed host cell of a DNA sequence encoding the .alpha.-1,3-glucan-3-glucanohydrolase enzyme of Bacillus circulans BC-8 (FERM BP-733).
