A process, system and pressure chamber for the automated sterilization of articles, particularly medical or dental instruments is disclosed, which is simple to use and economically efficient by comparison with conventional autoclaves and steam sterilizing system. Steam is generated by the pulsed injection of a controlled quantity of water into a heated boiler whenever it runs dry. The boiler is coupled in a closed-loop system to a relatively small pressure chamber in the form of a cassette that is readily inserted and removed from a holder comprising means for connecting the chamber to a steam inlet conduit and a venting conduit, the latter being closed off during pressurization of the chamber. By automated monitoring of the boiler and chamber temperatures, conditions in the chamber are measured and the boiler and valves in the system controlled to effect a sterilization cycle.
A process for the steam sterilization of articles by controlled delivery of steam from an electrically heated boiler in free communication with a pressure chamber through a delivery conduit, said boiler having means for detecting dryness of said boiler and said pressure chamber having a venting conduit and a valve for opening or closing said venting conduit comprising:
A process for producing a saturated vapor from a liquid comprising the steps of providing a first discrete dose of said liquid to a heated boiler for vaporizing said liquid, monitoring the temperature of said boiler to determine when substantially all of said first discrete dose has been vaporized by observing a sharp increase in said temperature of said boiler as a function of time, and providing a further discrete dose of said liquid to said heated boiler only when substantially all of said first discrete dose has been vaporized and in response to said step of observing a sharp increase in temperature.
A process for filling a chamber with a saturated vapor comprising the steps of providing a boiler connected to said chamber by a conduit for always allowing a continuous free flow of said vapor generated in said boiler to said chamber such that the pressure in the chamber becomes substantially that of the pressure in the boiler, generating said vapor in said boiler such that said boiler is filled with said vapor, conveying said vapor to said chamber through said conduit, monitoring the difference between the temperature of said vapor in said boiler and the temperature of a mixture of said vapor and any additional gas in said chamber, and purging said chamber if said difference exceeds a predetermined value.
