Abstract
A locking collar concentric with an inner ring and outer ring of a bearing assembly is advanced axially by threads or other mechanism on an axial extension of the inner ring. A wedge ring provides a wedge between the axial extension and a rotatable shaft upon advancement of the locking collar and grips the shaft. Preferably, conical washers between the axial extension and the locking collar are abutted by the wedge ring to provide further gripping of the shaft upon advancement of the locking collar. The wedge ring may be used alone or in combination with the conical washers to lock the bearing assembly to the shaft.
Claims15
A bearing assembly with a locking device for mounting on a rotatable shaft, the bearing assembly comprising:
- an outer ring;
- an inner ring concentric with the outer ring, the inner ring having an axial extension;
- a locking collar concentric with the inner ring;
- advancement means on the axial extension of the inner ring and the locking collar for advancing the locking collar axially with respect to the inner ring;
- and
- wedge means between the axial extension of the inner ring and the rotatable shaft for providing a wedge between the axial extension of the inner ring and the rotatable shaft upon advancement of the locking collar by the advancement means.
A bearing assembly with a locking device for mounting on a rotatable shaft, the bearing assembly comprising:
- an outer ring;
- an inner ring concentric with the outer ring, the inner ring having an axial extension;
- a locking collar concentric with the inner ring, the locking collar being threadably engageable with the axial extension of the inner ring;
- and
- a split wedge ring between the axial extension of the inner ring and the rotatable shaft such that the split wedge ring is wedged against the axial extension of the inner ring and against the rotatable shaft upon threaded engagement of the axial extension by the locking collar.
