Abstract
Novel intermediates useful in the preparation of the optically active antiviral compound [1R-(1.alpha.,2.beta.,3.alpha.)]-2-amino-9-[2,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)cyclobut yl]-1,9-dihydro-6H-purin-6-one are described.

A compound having the formula ##STR4## wherein R.sup.1 is straight or branched chain lower alkyl or 1 to 5 carbon,
- R.sup.3a is a chiral moiety of the formula ##STR5## R is straight or branched chain lower alkyl of 1 to 5 carbons, and Prot is t-butyldimethylsily, t-butyldiphenylsilyl, triisopropylsily, acetyl, benzoyl, triphenylmethyl, or 4'-methoxyphenyldiphenylmethyl.
