Musical instrument incorporating a Helmholtz resonator

A musical instrument including a sound source for generating a musical tone signal and a sound system for converting said musical tone signal into a sound and radiating said sound, wherein said sound system comprises:

• a shelf having an opening therein;
• a cabinet adjacent to the shelf and having a cavity which communicates with said opening, at least part of an inner wall of said cabinet consisting of a damping material for preventing duct resonance;
• a resonance port in said cabinet and communicating with said cavity;
• a Helmholtz resonator formed by said cavity and said resonance port;
• an electro-acoustic transducer, arranged adjacent to said opening in said shelf, for driving said Helmholtz resonator at one surface of a vibrating body of said transducer and directly radiating said sound from another surface of said vibrating body;
• and
• driving means having a negative impedance drive function for driving said transducer so as to cancel an air counteraction from said Helmholtz resonator to said vibrating body.

A musical instrument including a sound source for generating a musical tone signal and at least two sets of sound systems for converting said musical tone signal into a sound and radiating said sound, wherein said sound systems each comprises:

• a shelf having an opening therein;
• a cabinet adjacent to the shelf and having a cavity which communicates with said opening;
• a resonance port in said cabinet and communicating with said cavity;
• a Helmholtz resonator formed by said cavity and said resonance port, said Helmholtz resonator having a resonance frequency;
• an electro-acoustic transducer, arranged adjacent to said opening in said shelf, for driving said Helmholtz resonator at one surface of a vibrating body of said transducer and directly radiating said sound from another surface of said vibrating body, said resonance frequencies of said Helmholtz resonators of said sound systems being different from each other;
• and
• driving means having a negative impedance drive function for driving said transducer so as to cancel an air counteraction from said Helmholtz resonator to said vibrating body.

An electrical musical instrument comprising:

• a cabinet;
• a body having a shelf supported by a pair of leg members, said shelf having a first surface with a transducer mounting base, said shelf having material removed below said transducer mounting base forming an internal opening through said shelf into said cabinet, which is mounted on a second surface of said shelf;
• tone signal generating means for generating a musical tone signal;
• converting means for converting said musical tone into a sound, including a resonance port formed by a tube having an end connected to an external opening of said cabinet, and a Helmholtz resonator formed by said cabinet which has hollow portions, thereby said Helmholtz resonator being integral with and structured as part of said body, a resonance frequency of said Helmholtz resonator being determined by a volume of said hollow portions of said cabinet, and by a cross-sectional area and a length of said tube;
• an electro-acoustic transducer which is fixed above said cabinet on said transducer mounting base, and which has an electrical internal impedance;
• canceling means connected to said electro-acoustic transducer for creating a negative impedance having a value corresponding to said electrical internal impedance, so that said electrical internal impedance is substantially canceled;
• and
• driving means for driving said electro-acoustic transducer, said electro-acoustic transducer accordingly driving said Helmholtz resonator through said internal opening with one surface of said electro-acoustic transducer and radiating said sound from another surface of said electro-acoustic transducer, said electro-acoustic transducer and said Helmholtz resonator being driven independently due to substantial cancellation of said electrical internal impedance.

A musical instrument including a sound source for generating a musical tone signal and a sound system for converting said musical tone signal into a sound and radiating said sound, wherein said sound system comprises:

• a cabinet and a resonance port constituting a Helmholtz resonator which is integral with and structured as part of the musical instrument, said Helmholtz resonator having resonance characteristics;
• an electro-acoustic transducer, arranged in an outer wall of said cabinet, for driving said Helmholtz resonator at one surface of a vibrating body of said transducer and directly radiating said sound from another surface of said vibrating body, said transducer having motional characteristics and a non-motional impedance Z.sub.v ;
• and
• driving means for driving said transducer, said driving means having a negative drive impedance -Z.sub.o, the absolute value of which is substantially equal to said non-motional impedance Z.sub.v, thereby substantially cancelling Z.sub.v, so as to substantially eliminate interaction between the resonance characteristics of the Helmholtz resonator and the motional characteristics of the transducer, whereby the Helmholtz resonator is driven substantially independently of the motional characteristics of the transducer.

A musical instrument including a sound source for generating a musical tone signal and a sound system for converting said musical tone signal into a sound and radiating said sound, wherein said sound system comprises:

• a cabinet and a resonance port constituting a Helmholtz resonator which is integral with and structured as part of said musical instrument, said Helmholtz resonator having resonance characteristics, at least part of an inner wall of said cabinet consisting of a damping material for preventing duct resonance;
• an electro-acoustic transducer, arranged in an outer wall of said cabinet, for driving said Helmholtz resonator at one surface of a vibrating body of said transducer and directly radiating said sound from another surface of said vibrating body, said transducer having motional characteristics and a non-motional impedance Z.sub.v ;
• and
• driving means for driving said transducer, said driving means having a negative drive impedance -Z.sub.o, the absolute value of which is substantially equal to said non-motional impedance Z.sub.v, thereby substantially cancelling Z.sub.v, so as to substantially eliminate interaction between the resonance characteristics of the Helmholtz resonator and the motional characteristics of the transducer, whereby the Helmholtz resonator is driven substantially independently of the motional characteristics of the transducer.

A musical instrument including a sound source for generating a musical tone signal and at least two sets of sound systems for converting said musical tone signal into a sound and radiating said sound, wherein said sound systems each comprises:

• a cabinet and a resonance port constituting a Helmholtz resonator having resonance characteristics and a resonance frequency, said Helmholtz resonator being integral with and structured as part of said musical instrument;
• an electro-acoustic transducer, arranged in an outer wall of said cabinet, for driving said Helmholtz resonator at one surface of a vibrating body of said transducer and directly radiating said sound from another surface of said vibrating body, said transducer having motional characteristics and a non-motional impedance Z.sub.v, said resonance frequencies of said Helmholtz resonators of said sound systems being different from each other;
• and
• driving means for driving said transducer, said driving means having a negative driving impedance -Z.sub.0, the absolute value of which is substantially equal to said non-motional impedance Z.sub.v, thereby substantially cancelling Z.sub.v, so as to substantially eliminate interaction between the resonance characteristics of the Helmholtz resonator and the motional characteristics of the transducer, whereby the Helmholtz resonator is driven substantially independently of the motional characteristics of the transducer.
