Epoxy modified water clarifiers

Polyamine compounds of the formula:

• ##STR39## where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR40## where R is independently selected from from the group consisting of --(CH.sub.2).sub.p --, ##STR41## where p is from 1 to 8 and r is 0 to 8;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where n and m are independently range from 1 to 5 and q is 0 or 1.

Mixtures of polyamine compounds made by the reaction of a diamine selected from the group consisting of the formulae H.sub.2 NRNH.sub.2, ##STR42## and mixtures thereof, and an epoxide selected from the group consisting of the formulae:

• ##STR43## and mixtures thereof where R is independently selected from the group consisting of straight, branched or cyclic alkylene moieties and arylene moieties;
• and where R has from 1 to 26 carbon atoms;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where m are independently 1 to 5, and the mole ratio of diamine to epoxide ranges from 1:1 to 100:1 and where Y is selected from the group consisting of Cl, Br, I, and O.sub.3 SR" and where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR44##

Mixtures of polyamine compounds made by the reaction of a diamine selected from the group consisting of the formulae H.sub.2 NRNH.sub.2, ##STR46## and mixtures thereof, and an epoxide selected from the group consisting of the formulae:

• ##STR47## and mixtures thereof where R is independently selected from the group consisting of --(CH.sub.2).sub.p --, ##STR48## where p is from 1 to 8 and r is 0 to 8;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where m are independently 1 to 5, and the mole ratio of diamine to epoxide ranges from 1:1 to 100:1 and where Y is selected from the group consisting of Cl, Br, I, and O.sub.3 SR" and where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR49##

Dithiocarbamic salts of the formula:

• ##STR50## where R" is in dependently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR51## where R is independently selected from the group consisting of straight, branched or cyclic alkylene moieties and arylene moieties;
• and where R has from 1 to 26 carbon atoms;
• and where R' is
• ti --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where n and m independently range from 1 to 5 and q is 0 or 1 and X is hydrogen, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, ammonium ion or an amine.

Dithiocarbamic salts of the formula:

• ##STR53## where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR54## where R is independently selected from the group consisting of --(CH.sub.2).sub.p --, ##STR55## where p is from 1 to 8 and r is 0 to 8;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where n and m independently range from 1 to 5 and q is 0 or 1 and X is hydrogen, and alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, ammonium ion or an amine.

A mixture of dithiocarbamic salts made by the process comprising the steps of:

• reacting a diamine selected from the group consisting of the formulae H.sub.2 NRNH.sub.2, ##STR56## and mixtures thereof;
• and an epoxide selected from the group consisting of the formulae:
• ##STR57## and mixtures thereof where R is independently selected from the group consisting of straight, branched or cyclic alkylene moieties and arylene moieties;
• and where R has from 1 to 26 carbon atoms;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where m are independently 1 to 5, and the mole ratio of diamine to epoxide ranges form 1:1 to 100:1 and where Y is selected from the group consisting of Cl, Br, I, and O.sub.3 SR" and where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR58## to give a polyamine intermediate;
• reacting the polyamine intermediate with carbon disulfide, where the mole ratio of carbon disulfide to primary and secondary amine groups in the polyamine is about 1:1 to give a dithiocarbamic acid and
• reacting the dithiocarbamic acid with a source of alkali metal ion, alkaline earth metal ion, ammonium ion amine ion to give a mixture of dithiocarbamic salts.

A method of clarifying an aqueous system containing an oil-in-water emulsion or dispersion of a non-aqueous discontinuous phase comprising the steps of:

• contacting the aqueous system with an effective water clarifying amount of at least one dithiocarbamic salt of the formula:
• ##STR59## where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR60## where R is independently selected from the group consisting of straight, branched or cyclic alkylene moieties and arylene moieties;
• and where R has from 1 to 26 carbon atoms;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where n and m are independently 1 to 5 and q is 0 or 1 and X is hydrogen, an alkali metal an alkaline earth metal, ammonium ion or an amine;
• and
• maintaining the dithiocarbamic salt in the system for sufficient time to effectively clarify the aqueous system.

A method of clarifying an aqueous system containing an oil-in-water emulsion or dispersion of a non-aqueous discontinuous phase comprising the steps of:

• contacting the aqueous system with an effective water clarifying amount of at least one dithiocarbamic salt of the formula:
• ##STR62## where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR63## where R is independently selected from the group consisting of --(CH.sub.2).sub.p --, ##STR64## where p is from 1 to 8 and r is 0 to 8;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where n and m are independently 1 to 5 and q is 0 or 1 and X is hydrogen, an alkali metal an alkaline earth metal, ammonium ion or an amine;
• and
• maintaining the dithiocarbamic salt in the system for sufficient time to effectively clarify the aqueous system.

A method of clarifying an aqueous system containing an oil-in-water emulsion or dispersion of a non-aqueous discontinuous phase comprising the steps of:

• contacting the aqueous system with an effective water clarifying amount of at least one dithiocarbamic salt made by the process comprising the steps of:
• reacting a diamine selected from the group consisting of the formulae H.sub.2 NRNH.sub.2, ##STR65## and mixtures thereof;
• and an epoxide selected from the group consisting of the formulae:
• ##STR66## and mixtures thereof where R is independently selected from the group consisting of straight, branched or cyclic alkylene moieties and arylene moieties;
• and where R has from 1 to 26 carbon atoms;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where m are independently 1 to 5, and the mole ratio of diamine to epoxide ranges from 1:1 to 100:1 and where Y is selected from the group consisting of Cl, Br, I, and O.sub.3 SR" and where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR67## to give a polyamine intermediate;
• reacting the polyamine intermediate with carbon disulfide, where the mole ratio of carbon disulfide to primary and secondary amine groups in the polyamine is about 1:1 to give a dithiocarbamic acid;
• and
• reacting the dithiocarbamic acid with a source of alkali metal ion, alkaline earth metal ion, ammonium ion amine ion to give a dithiocarbamic salt;
• and
• maintaining the dithiocarbamic salt in the system for sufficient time to effectively clarify the aqueous system

A method of inhibiting corrosion in an aqueous system comprising the steps of:

• contacting the aqueous system with an effective corrosion inhibiting amount of at least one dithiocarbamic salt of the formula:
• ##STR68## where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR69## where R is independently selected from the group consisting of straight, branched or cyclic alkylene moieties and arylene moieties;
• and where R has from 1 to 26 carbon atoms;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where n and m are independently 1 to 5 and q is 0 or 1 and X is hydrogen, an alkali metal an alkaline earth metal, ammonium ion or an amine;
• and
• maintaining the dithiocarbamic salt in the aqueous system for sufficient time to inhibit corrosion.

A method of inhibiting corrosion in an aqueous system comprising the steps of:

• contacting the aqueous system with an effective corrosion inhibiting amount of at least one dithiocarbamic salt of the formula:
• ##STR71## where R" is independently selected from the group consisting of the structure --R--NH.sub.2 and ##STR72## where R is independently selected from the group consisting of --(CH.sub.2).sub.p --, ##STR73## where p is from 1 to 8 and r is 0 to 8;
• and where R' is
• --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --O--R--O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --
• where n and m are independently 1 to 5 and q is 0 or 1 and X is hydrogen, an alkali metal an alkaline earth metal ammonium ion or an amine;
• and
• maintaining the dithiocarbamic salt in the aqueous system for sufficient time to inhibit corrosion.
