Used lubricating oils can be rejuvenated by passing the oil through a filter system comprising a hollow solid composite that contains a thermoplastic binder and an active filter media of a chemically active filter media, a physically active filter media, or mixtures thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the composite is formed by forcing a substantially uniform mixture of thermoplastic binder particles, active filter media particles, solvent 600 Neutral base oil, and sodium stearate through an extrusion die of substantially uniform cross-section, wherein the mixture is subjected to heat, pressure, and cooling to consolidate the mixture so that it emerges from the die as a hollow solid composite. Most preferably, the composite will surround an inactive filter media located within the filter system.
A method for removing polynuclear aromatics from a used lubricating oil which comprises passing the lubricating oil through a filter system containing a hollow solid composite comprising a thermoplastic binder and activated carbon, wherein the composite is formed by the steps comprising
A method for removing polynuclear aromatics from a used lubricating oil which comprises passing the lubricating oil through a filter system that contains (1) a hollow solid composite comprising from about 2 to 25 wt. % of nylon particles and from about 40 to about 75 wt. % of activated carbon particles, and (2) an inactive filter media, wherein the composite in (1) is formed by the steps comprising
