Abstract
This invention provides novel ester compounds represented by the following general formula (1): ##STR1## (wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are alkyl groups and may be the same or not, A and B are selected from a single bond and --COO--, X is selected from ##STR2## optically active bodies thereof and liquid crystal compositions containing at least one of these compounds.

An ester compound represented by the following general formula (I):
- ##STR42## , wherein R.sup.1 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl group and R.sup.2 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl group and may be the same or not, A and B are selected from a single bond and --COO--, X is selected from ##STR43##
