Abstract
A glare control lamp and reflector assembly and method for glare control which includes a lamp and reflector for providing a controlled light beam to a target area. The reflector can be altered to alter the controlled light beam. Also, light controlling devices can be positioned on or in the reflector to control light.

A mean for light control for sports field lighting comprising:
- support means for elevating a lighting fixture substantially above ground and oriented generally towards a sports field;
- a reflecting means associated with the light fixture for directing light down to and above the sports field;
- an arc lamp positioned generally within the reflecting means;
- and
- the reflecting means including at least some reflecting surfaces which are symmetrical with respect to the arc lamp, at least some surfaces which convergingly reflect light from the arc lamp, and at least some surfaces which divergingly reflect light from the arc lamp to control light down to and above the sports field, a portion of the reflecting means comprising a diverging reflector surface generally positioned in a lower hemisphere of the reflecting means.
A means for light control for sports field lighting comprising:
- support means for elevating a lighting fixture substantially above ground and oriented generally toward a sports field;
- a reflecting means associated with the light fixture for directing light down to and above the sports field;
- an arc lamp positioned generally within the reflecting means;
- and
- the reflecting means including at least some reflecting surfaces which are symmetrical with respect to the arc lamp, at least some surface which convergingly reflect light from the arc lamp, and at least some surfaces which divergingly reflect light from the arc lamp to control light down to and above the sports field, the reflecting means including a reflector visor, said reflector visor being removably positioned to a reflector perimeter edge by mounting means, said mounting means comprising clip members having first and second legs being joined at one end, and having facing jaw members at the other ends, one of the legs being securable to the reflector visor, the clip means including means for drawing the first and second legs towards one another so as to draw the jaws of the first and second legs together to grip the reflecting means of the lighting fixture.
A method for controlling light to a sports field comprising:
- elevating a light fixture substantially above ground and oriented generally towards the sports field;
- positioning an arc lamp generally within a reflecting means associated with the lighting fixture, the reflecting means having a reflecting surface;
- and
- configuring the reflecting surface to have at least some surfaces which are symmetrical with respect to the arc lamp, at least some surfaces which convergingly reflect light from the arc lamp, and at least some surfaces which divergingly reflect light from the arc lamp to control light to the sports field;
- selectively incorporating, as needed, an additional reflecting surface extending from the reflecting means, and incorporating in the additional reflecting surface, as needed, a reflecting insert means generally within the additional reflecting surface.
A means for light control for sports field lighting comprising:
- support means for elevating a lighting fixture substantially above ground and oriented generally toward a sports field;
- a reflecting means associated with the light fixture for directing light down to and above the sports field;
- an arc lamp positioned generally within the reflecting means;
- and
- the reflecting means including at least some reflecting surfaces which are symmetrical with respect to the arc lamp, at least some surfaces which convergingly reflect light from the arc lamp, and at least some surfaces which divergingly reflect light from the arc lamp to control light down to and above the sports field, the reflecting means including a visor means for blocking and redirecting incident light from the arc light, the visor means extending outwardly from the reflecting means, the reflecting means further comprising a second reflector visor extending from the visor means.
A means for light control for sports field lighting comprising:
- support means for elevating a lighting fixture substantially above ground and oriented generally toward a sports field;
- a reflecting means associated with the light fixture for directing light down to and above the sports field;
- an arc lamp positioned generally within the reflecting means;
- and
- the reflecting means including at least some reflecting surfaces which are symmetrical with respect to the arc lamp, at least some surfaces which convergingly reflect light from the arc lamp, and at least some surfaces which divergingly reflect light from the arc lamp to control light down to and above the sports field, the reflecting means including a visor means for blocking and redirecting incident light from the arc light, the visor means extending outwardly from the reflecting means, the reflecting means further comprising an inner visor insert positionable within the visor means.
A means for light control for sports field lighting comprising:
- support means for elevating a lighting fixture substantially above ground and oriented generally toward a sports field;
- a reflecting means associated with the light fixture for directing light down to and above the sports field;
- an arc lamp positioned generally within the reflecting means;
- and
- the reflecting means including at least some reflecting surfaces which are symmetrical with respect to the arc lamp, at least some surfaces which convergingly reflect light from the arc lamp, and at least some surfaces which divergingly reflect light from the arc lamp to control light down to and above the sports field, the reflecting means including a visor means for blocking and redirecting incident light from the arc light, the visor means extending outwardly from the reflecting means, the reflecting means further comprising an arc suppressor insert mounted within the visor means.
A method for controlling light to a sports field comprising:
- elevating a light fixture substantially above ground and oriented generally towards the sports field;
- positioning an arc lamp generally within a reflecting means associated with the light fixture, the reflecting means having a reflecting surface;
- and
- configuring the reflecting surface to have at least some surfaces which are symmetrical with respect to the arc lamp, at least some surfaces which convergingly reflect light from the arc lamp, and at least some surfaces which divergingly reflect light from the arc lamp to control light to the sports field;
- utilizing surfaces of varying specularity on the reflecting means, and additions to at least one of the reflecting means and arc lamp, to alter and control lighting and reflecting characteristics.
