Abstract
Rhenium has been found to be formaldehyde resistant catalyst and is thus useful in the catalytic hydrogenation of carbonyls, acetals and esters to alcohols when the reaction medium contains formaldehyde as a reactant or impurity. Also, rhenium is a useful catalyst in the hydrogenolysis of acylic acetals to alcohols.
Claims11
In a process for catalytically hydrogenating an organic feed in a reaction medium which includes formaldehyde or formaldehyde precursors which are converted to formaldehyde during reaction, the improvement comprising:
- said organic feed being selected from the group consisting of an acetal, an ester and acetaldehyde and hydrogenating said organic feed in the presence of a catalyst comprising rhenium oxide or mixture of rhenium oxides.
