Abstract
The present invention relates to 4-amino-3-hydroxy-phthalide, an important intermediate for the synthesis of 3-substituted-5-quinoline-carboxylic acids and to a process for its preparation.

4-Amino-3-hydroxy-phthalide of the formula ##STR6##
A process for the preparation of 4-amino-3-hydroxy-phthalide of the formula ##STR7## which comprises reducing 4-nitro-3-hydroxy-phthalide of the formula ##STR8## by hydrogenation in an inert solvent.
