Abstract
7-(substituted)piperazinyl-1-ethyl-6-fluoro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids, the pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof, compositions containing them, processes and intermediates for producing them, and methods of using them to treat bacterial infections in warm-blooded animals.

A compound of the formula ##STR10## wherein R.sup.3 is hydrogen, alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3), or benzyl;
- and R.sup.4 is fluoromethyl, difluoromethyl, trifluoromethyl, alkoxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.18) methyl, alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)aminomethyl, dialkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)aminomethyl, cycloalkyl(C.sub.3 -C.sub.6), vinyl, ethynyl, 1-methyl-piperazin-4-ylmethyl, 5-chloro-benzofuran-2-yl, 5-chloro-3-methyl-benzo[b]thien-2-yl, 1-phenylsulfonyl-1H-pyrrol-3-yl, benzofuran-2-yl, 1-phenylsulfonyl-1H-indol-3-yl, 1H-pyrrol-1-ylmethyl, pyridinyl, 1H-pyrazol-3(and 5)-yl, or a 5-membered heterocyclic ring of the formula ##STR11## wherein w is O, S or N, Z is H, halogen or lower alkyl(C.sub.1 -C.sub.3), Y is H, halogen or lower alkyl(C.sub.1 -C.sub.3).
