An ultrathin polymeric membrane has a membrane thickness of 10 to 1,000 .ANG.. The membrane is constituted of polycarboxylate and obtained by the spin coating method or by the Langmuir-Blodgett method. The polycarboxylate contains recurrent units represented by the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 represent different groups and each stands for a methyl group or a hydrogen atom, and R represents a hydrocarbon group selected from the group consisting of a branched alkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, a substituted alkyl group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, a substituted cycloalkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms and a siloxanic hydrocarbon group.
An ultrathin polymeric membrane having a membrane thickness of 10 to 1,000 .ANG., the membrane being constituted of polycrotonate and obtained by forming a coating of said polycrotonate by subjecting said polycrotonate to the spin coating method, said polycrotonate comprising recurrent units represented by the formula (I) ##STR4## wherein R represents a hydrocarbon group selected from the group consisting of a branched alkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, a substituted alkyl group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms and containing a ring structure having 3 to 14 carbon atoms, a substituted cycloalkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms and containing a ring structure substituent having 3 to 14 carbon atoms and a siloxanic hydrocarbon group containing a ring structure substituent having 3 to 14 carbon atoms with or without each of said hydrocarbon groups containing a hetero atom and being substituted by a halogen atom.
An ultrathin polymeric membrane having a membrane thickness of 10 to 1,000 .ANG., the membrane being constituted of polycrotonate and obtained by forming a coating of said polycrotonate by subjecting said polycrotonate to the Langmuir-Blodgett method, said polycrotonate comprising recurrent units represented by the formula (I) ##STR5## wherein R represents a hydrocarbon group selected from the group consisting of a branched alkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, a substituted alkyl group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms and containing a ring structure substituent having 3 to 14 carbon atoms, a substituted cycloalkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms and containing a ring structure substituent having 3 to 14 carbon atoms and a siloxanic hydrocarbon group containing a ring structure substituent having 3 to 14 carbon atoms with or without each of said hydrocarbon groups containing a hetero atom and being substituted by a halogen atom.
