Abstract
2-Methylbenzaldehyde dialkyl acetals of the general formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 -alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkoxy and R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sup.8 -alkyl, with the proviso that R.sup.1 is not methoxy when R.sup.2 is methyl, are prepared and are used for the preparation of 2-methylbenzaldehydes.

A process for the preparation of a 2-methylbenzaldehyde dialkyl acetal of the formula ##STR4## where R.sup.1 is C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 -alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkoxy and R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, with the proviso that R.sup.1 is not methoxy when R.sup.2 is methyl, which process comprises:
- electrochemically oxidizing a 1,2-dimethylbenzene of the formula ##STR5## where R.sup.1 has the above-mentioned meanings, with an alcohol R.sup.2 --OH, where R.sup.2 has the above-mentioned meanings, and an auxiliary electrolyte.
