Abstract
A high density, shock resistant ceramic comprising from 1 to about 4 mols of a a dense spinel ceramic matrix having dispersed therein, 1.5 to 1, respectively, of a metal oxide derived from a decomposable salt of said metal and having a thermal expansion characteristic different from said dense spinel ceramic matrix and at the decomposition temperature a volume less than that exhibited by its salt form and a process for preparing same.
Claims2
A ceramic material consisting essentially of a mixture which has undergone densification, said mixture consisting essentially of
- 1) 1 to 4 mol of MgAl.sub.2 O.sub.4 spinel as a matrix material which is densifiable at between 1000.degree. C. and 1750.degree. C., and
- 2) dispersed in the spinel matrix, 1.5 to 1 mol of Mg oxide derived, during said densification, as the decomposition product of a thermally decomposable magnesium salt, said Mg oxide having
- a) a thermal expansion characteristic different from said matrix, and
- b) a volume, as the oxide, less than that of the decomposable salt from which it is derived, and
- said Mg oxide being unmelted at the temperature of said densification and being present in an amount sufficient to provide a quantity in excess of that which goes into solid solution in the spinel matrix during said densification thereof.
