Abstract
A liquid crystal compound represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents an alkyl group having from 3 to 18 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 represents an alkyl group having from 3 to 18 carbon atoms; X represents ##STR2## (A) and (B) each represents a group selected from the group consisting of ##STR3## and * indicates an optically active center.

A liquid crystal compound represented by formula (III) ##STR22## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 represents an alkyl group having from 4 to 15 carbon atoms, (A) and (B) each represents a group selected from the group of ##STR23## and which compound is in an S.sup.*.sub.(3) phase.
