An insulating roller cover is now disclosed that provides a highly desirable combination of features. The cover is free from asbestos and is therefore of more desirable construction for handling and use. For the roller cover, at least substantially ceramic fiber is highly compressed, providing a dense and refractory, elevated temperature resistant insulating cover. The cover may itself serve as a load bearing surface; or may provide a foundation or protective media for annular discs or sleeve members made of various, load bearing materials. These load bearing materials may be unable to resist direct contact with the shaft due to thermal shock or the differences in their respective expansion and contraction rates. Where impregnant is utilized with the highly compressed fiber, such will often comprise a colloidal substituent.
A roller especially adapted for use in roller conveying articles, which articles are at substantially elevated temperature, or which articles are being conveyed through a zone of substantially elevated temperature, which roller comprises an inner shaft having at least one dense and refractory, elevated temperature resistant annular insulating cover member of highly compressed at least substantially ceramic fiber, including fibers of different lengths, with there being some fibers having lengths of at least about 2 inches, said fibers being compressed in an amount within the range of from about 50 percent to about 80 percent to a fiber density, basis dry fiber, within the range of from about 16 to about 50 pounds per cubic foot.
A roller especially adapted for use in roller conveying articles, which articles are at substantially elevated temperature, or which articles are being conveyed through a zone of substantially elevated temperature, which roller comprises an inner shaft having at least one dense and refractory, elevated temperature resistant annular cover member of highly axially compressed at least substantially ceramic fiber, said fiber being compressed in an amount within the range of from about 50 percent to about 80 percent, to a fiber density, basis dry fiber, within the range of from about 16 to about 50 pounds per cubic foot, said annular cover member being axially compressed on said inner shaft, said compressed cover providing a smooth and compressed, outer weight bearing roller fiber surface for contact with roller conveyed articles.
In glass conveying apparatus wherein sheet glass at elevated temperature is conveyed across roller conveyors, the improvement comprising roller conveyors having an inner shaft and at least one dense and refractory, elevated temperature resistant insulating cover member of highly-compressed at least substantially ceramic fiber, including fibers of different lengths, with there being some fibers having lengths of at least about 2 inches, said fiber being compressed in an amount within the range of from about 50 to about 80 percent to a fiber density, basis dry fiber, within the range of from about 16 to about 50 pounds per cubic foot.
A roller especially adapted for use in roller conveying articles, which articles are at substantially elevated temperature, or which articles are being conveyed through a zone of substantially elevated temperature, which roller comprises:
In a conveying apparatus wherein sheet articles at elevated temperature are conveyed across roller conveyors, the improvement comprising roller conveyors having an inner shaft and at least one dense and refractory, elevated temperature resistant insulating cover member having an inner layer comprising highly-compressed at least substantially ceramic fiber, and an outer shot containment layer as a covering for said inner ceramic fiber layer, wherein said ceramic fiber includes fibers of different lengths, with there being some fibers having lengths of at least about 2 inches, said fiber being compressed in an amount within the range of from about 50 to about 80 percent to a fiber density, basis dry fiber, within the range of from about 16 to about 50 pounds per cubic foot.
