Abstract
Substituted gem-diphosphonate compounds having use as cholesterol lowering agents are disclosed. A compound of the invention is tetraethyl-2-[3-t-butyl-4-hydroxynaphthyl]ethenylidene-1,1-diphosphonate.

A compound of structure (I) :
- ##STR6## where R is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl and q is 0 or 1;
- R.sup.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-8 alkyl;
- R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are the same or different and are OR.sup.7 in which R.sup.7 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-8 alkyl;
- or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together and R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 together form a C.sub.2-8 alkylene dioxy ring;
- R.sup.6 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl;
- m is 0 or 1, and
- A is S, S(CH.sub.2).sub.n, CH.dbd.CHCH.sub.2, (CH.sub.2).sub.n or (CH.dbd.CH).sub.p (CH.sub.2).sub.t CH.dbd.in which n is 1 to 7, p is 0 or 1 and t is 0 to 4, with the proviso that m is 0 only when A is (CH.dbd.CH).sub.p (CH.sub.2).sub.t CH.dbd..
