Abstract
A key system for a fuel filter assembly employs angularly spaced arcuate protrusions which protrude radially from the cylindrical sidewall of the cartridge. The base has corresponding tracks defined by equidistantly spaced rails which engage with the protrusions to key the cartridge with the base. The key system is employed either apart from or in conjunction with a second axial key/slot system of the base and the cartridge.
Claims23
A fuel filter assembly comprising:
- base means comprising an inlet and an outlet, receptacle means having a first axis, and conduit means for providing fluid communication with said inlet and said outlet, a plurality of keys projecting axially from said receptacle means parallel to and angularly spaced about said first axis, said receptacle means comprising at least one axial track comprising a pair of spaced edges generally parallel to said first axis and a surface section interconnecting said spaced edges, said track opening towards said first axis;
- disposable cartridge means at least partially axially receivable in said receptacle means and comprising filter means housing means having a second axis for housing said filter means for filtering fuel, said housing means comprising slot means for defining a plurality of axial slots complementary with said keys, said cartridge means having at least one protrusion extending generally radially outward relative to said second axis and corresponding to said at least one track and closely receivable in said corresponding track;
- and
- retainer means for lockably retaining said cartridge means to said base means so that said keys are received in said corresponding slots and said at least one protrusion is received in said at least one corresponding track to lock said cartridge means to said base means at a fixed angular position thereof.
A fuel filter assembly comprising:
- base means comprising an inlet and an outlet, receptacle means having an inner surface defining a first axis and a receiving cavity, said inner surface comprising at least one recessed track comprising a pair of spaced edges substantially parallel to said first axis;
- disposable cartridge means comprising filter means for filtering fuel and axially receivable in said receptacle means, said cartridge means comprising housing means having a second axis for housing said filter means for filtering fuel, said housing means having a cylindrical portion surrounding at least a portion of said filter means, said cartridge means comprising at least one protrusion extending radially outward from said cylindrical portion relative to said second axis, said at least one protrusion corresponding to said at least one track and closely receivable in said corresponding track at a first fixed angular position;
- and
- retainer means for lockably retaining said cartridge means to said base means so that at least one said protrusion is initially received in said corresponding at least one track to lock said cartridge means to said base means at said fixed angular position thereof.
A disposable filter cartridge for mounting to a base to form a fuel filter assembly comprising:
- filter means;
- housing means for housing said filter means comprising a generally cylindrical enclosure having an axis and a first end portion defining an axial opening;
- shoulder means connected to said housing means comprising a substantially circumferentially extending shoulder for axial engagement to secure said cartridge to a base, said shoulder means extending generally radially relative to said axis from said cylindrical enclosure, said cylindrical enclosure surrounding at least portion of said filter means;
- and
- key means for keying with said base comprising a plurality of angularly spaced protrusions extending generally radially outward relative to said axis from said cylindrical enclosure adjacent said first end portion.
A fuel filter assembly comprising:
- base means comprising an inlet and an outlet, receptacle means having an inner surface defining a first axis and a receiving cavity, said inner surface comprising at least one recessed track comprising a pair of spaced axial edges;
- disposable cartridge means axially receivable in said receptacle means, and comprising filter means;
- and housing means having a second axis for housing said filter means for filtering fuel, said cartridge means comprising a plurality of angularly spaced protrusions extending radially outward relative to said second axis, said protrusions corresponding to said tracks and closely receivable in said corresponding tracks and wherein said protrusions have a generally arcuate section portion in a plane orthogonal to said second axis and the arcuate section portion dimensions two of said protrusions are different;
- and
- retainer means for lockably retaining said cartridge means to said base means so that at least one said protrusion is received in said corresponding at least one track to lock said cartridge means to said base means at a fixed angular position thereof.
A disposable filter cartridge for mounting to a base to form a fuel filter assembly comprising:
- filter means;
- and housing means for housing said filter means comprising a generally cylindrical enclosure having an axis and a first end portion defining an axial opening;
- shoulder means connected to said housing means and extending generally radially relative to said axis from said housing means;
- and
- key means for keying with said base comprising a plurality of angularly spaced protrusions extending generally radially relative to said axis from said enclosure, said protrusions having a generally arcuate shaped section portion in a plane orthogonal to said axis, and wherein the arcuate section portion dimensions of two of said protrusions are different.
