Moldable polyester resins having high melt-phase stability and which form substantially no thermal decomposition products during melt-phase processing have a carboxyl end group concentration of no greater than 40 milliequivalent/kg, and are the reaction product of (a) an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or its ester-forming derivative, (b) an aliphatic dihydroxy compound having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, and (c) an ester-forming comonomer having the general formula (I): HO--R--O--A--O--R--OH (I) wherein A represents a divalent organic radical having at least one aromatic ring, R represents a divalent organic radical selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbon groups and polyoxyalkylene groups each having 2 to 8 carbon atoms. The ester-forming comonomer is incorporated into the polyester resin chain in an amount between 0.01 to 7 molar %, based on the aromatic dicarboxylic acid.
