Abstract
A polymer having an average molecular weight of less than about 150,000 and comprising about 3 to about 20 weight percent olefinic carboxylic acid and 80 to about 97 weight percent nonionic monomers is capable of enhancing (a) the gloss and (b) the flow and leveling characteristics of a latex paint.
Claims18
A binder comprising water and solids, wherein about 1 to about 30 weight percent of the solid content of the binder is a polymer comprising:
- (a) about 3 to about 20 weight percent non-functional non-ionic monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, alkenyl aromatic monomers, acrylic monomers having the formula ##STR10## and mixtures thereof, wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl and R.sub.2 is an alkyl group comprising up to 6 carbon atoms, the polymer having a weight average molecular weight of about 15,000 to 150,000.
A binder comprising water and solids, wherein about 1 to about 30 weight percent of the solid content of the binder is a polymer comprising:
- (a) about 3 to about 20 weight percent olefinic carboxylic acid;
- and
- (b) at least about 43 weight percent acrylic monomer having the formula ##STR11## wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl and R.sub.2 is an alkyl group comprising up to 6 carbon atoms, the polymer having a weight average molecular weight of about 15,000 to about 150,000.
