Abstract
An anti-inflammatory drug which is phenylacetic acid derivative and methods of using the same in topically controlling eye inflammations. The preferred drug is 2-[4(2-hydroxypropoxy)phenyl]propionic acid.
Claims17
The compound of the formula:
- ##STR4## wherein R=H, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 straight and branched chain alkyls with or without an additional hydroxyl, 6- or 1-[2-deoxy-a-D-arabino-hexopyranoside], and N,N-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-hydroxyacetamide or other hydrophilic glycolamides;
- Z is oxygen;
- n=1 to 4;
- m=0 or 1, and ophthalmically acceptable salt forms thereof.
A method of effectively and topically treating both external and internal inflammations of the eye so as to reduce unwanted systemic side effects, with nonsteroidal drugs capable of eye penetration, said method comprising:
- administering to an affected eye an external and internal inflammation reducing effective amount of a compound of the formula:
- ##STR5## wherein R=H, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 straight and branched chain alkyls with or without an additional hydroxyl, 6- or 1-[2-deoxy-a-D-arabino-hexopyranoside], and N,N-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-hydroxyacetamide or other hydrophilic glycolamindes;
- Z=oxygen or methylene;
- n=1 to 4;
- m=0 or 1, and opthalmically acceptable salt forms thereof which penetrates the eye.
A nonsteroidal pharmaceutical composition for topically treating external and internal inflammation of the eye comprising an external and internal inflammation reducing effective amount of a compound of the formula:
- ##STR6## wherein R=H, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 straight and branched chain alkyls with or without an additional hydroxyl, 6- or 1-[2-deoxy-a-D-arabino-hexopyranoside], and N,N-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-hydroxyacetamide or other hydrophilic glycolamides;
- Z=oxygen or methylene;
- n=1 to 4;
- m=0 or 1, and ophthalmically acceptable salt forms thereof and an ophthalmically effective carrier therefore.
