This invention provides a process and intermediates for preparing 2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-7-carboxylic acids.

A compound of Formula II ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen, methyl, halo, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl)-S(O).sub.t -, trifluoromethyl, or (CH.sub.3).sub.2 NSO.sub.2 --, and t is 0, 1, or 2.
A compound of Formula III ##STR5## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen, methyl, halo, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl)-S(O).sub.t -, trifluoromethyl, or (CH.sub.3).sub.2 NSO.sub.2 --, and t is 0, 1, or 2.
